SCCC offers a unique ten-week class called Best Practice Parenting that we developed to support parents with mindful awareness tools, child development knowledge and interactive explorations of the challenges of raising children in our society. The curriculum is designed to help parents feel respected and valued, to honor their strengths and to help them feel safe to share their struggles. Each year, the School-Based Program here at SCCC provides mental health services for about 100 LAUSD students. Faced with constant budget cuts, schools are often forced to eliminate mental health services, and these students may not otherwise have access to much-needed counseling. Marisa Ice, LMFT, who has served as our Client Coordinator and School-Based Program Director for the last several years has been promoted to Assistant Clinical Director of the Southern California Counseling Center effective July 1, 2017. Starting in 2009, Marisa trained at SCCC before she was licensed and then came on staff in 2013. Every January and July, the Southern California Counseling Center offers a six-month Community Counselor Course (CCC). CCC provides training, supervision and support for community members who are already involved, or are interested in helping high-risk populations and under-served communities. The course provides students with the opportunity to build a solid base of counseling skills alongside case workers and staff members from local non-profits and government agencies.

For the last 15 years, SCCC’s Outreach Services program, in coordination with CleanSlate, has organized a Holiday Feast Drive to provide support for 20 families in need during the Holiday Season.
“As a community we come together to provide a Holiday Feast for 20 families in SCCC’s Outreach programs. We will be selecting 10 families from the Mid-City Center and 10 families from the Watts Community through our work with families at (WLCAC) counseling/trauma services provided by SCCC,” says Marianne Diaz, Director of Outreach Services.
