Helping Fathers Become Better Parents

Recognizing that family is the preferred choice for raising a child, Project FatherhoodSM provides comprehensive parenting skills for fathers. The Men in Relationships Group (MIRG) includes weekly sessions. Fathers progress through five levels of treatment: intake, rapport and trust, symptom relief, behavior change, and internalization and commitment.

Project FatherhoodSM is designed for fathers of all ages, races and educational backgrounds, their children, and the significant others in their lives. Indeed, differences in cultural and ethnic backgrounds are used as part of the learning process - of their own and others' cultures.

MIRG sessions address matters such as the fathers' understanding of appropriate discipline, child abuse and neglect, domestic abuse issues, communicating needs, and choosing a healthy mate. The group also tackles traumatic experiences in the fathers' backgrounds that affect their relationships with their children and partners. In the MIRG group process fathers participate in grounded relationship-building. This establishes peer identification, support, and a sense of community.

Children's Enrichment Group and Process Group for Significant Persons

In addition to the Men In Relationships Group (MIRG), Project FatherhoodSM also runs a concurrent Children's Enrichment Group. Fathers are encouraged to bring their children to participate in enrichment activities.

Built into the program is the understanding that time spent to and from the group sessions provides father and child with valuable personal time to talk and interact with one another. This strengthens the father-child relationship.

After sessions, group facilitators meet with childcare providers to share thoughts, impressions and observations regarding the children. This feedback is used by the facilitators in sharpening their work with the fathers.

The Project FatherhoodSM program also provides a parallel group process for other significant persons in the lives of the children and/or father.
