The Southern California Counseling Center was founded in 1966 with the following philosophy:

"The intent of the Center is that people shall have human contact when they need it and for no other reason than that they need it."

Over the last four decades SCCC has stayed true to this philosophy as the range and scope of its programs has grown. Today, in addition to individual, couple, and family counseling, we offer a broad menu of services including The Abuse Prevention Program (court approved domestic violence groups), Teen Violence Prevention Group, School-based Counseling, Rage Resolution Group, Project Fatherhood, and Children Affected by Domestic Violence Group. Community workers in the helping professions throughout Southern California have graduated from our Community Outreach Programs such as the Community Counselor Certification Course and GATE (Gang Awareness Training and Education.) Through the dedication of over 150 volunteer counselors, supervisors and board members and a small paid staff we are able to provide over 15,000 hours of affordable counseling services to our highly diverse clientele annually.

In the meantime, SCCC has grown into one of the premier training sites for pre-licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychology interns and paraprofessional counselors. Our counselors have the opportunity to work in all of our programs and benefit from our extensive training courses and frequent workshops with outside presenters.

Because SCCC accepts no government funding or insurance payments, anyone can qualify for our services and there is no restriction on how long clients can participate. We are not required to give our clients a diagnosis in order to work with them. We are able to work from a collaborative, strength-based model that acknowledges the broader context of the challenges a client may be facing. In the absence of government and insurance funding, we rely on client fees, counselor fees, private grants and the generous donations of our board, alumni, and community supporters to keep our doors open.
